2 Weeks To Go

Welcome to our class Emily! It sounds like you had a
fantastic learning experience in Germany. Have some
discussions with your friends and peers about the daily
routines in our room. I’ll see you soon everyone.
………………………………………………………………………………
Reading
 – work at reading skills from the Nelson ‘Literacy’ books
– each day read selections from the unit called “Canada’s Links to the World” (Socials unit too)
– almost all of the short stories and non-fictional pieces have built in questions and strategies throughout.
 – the students will read, discuss, and respond to these QUESTIONS  in their reading response notebooks.
………………………………………….

Writing
 – we have been working at writing short, short stories with dialogue, proper paragraphing, and punctuation. Two have been completed ... “The Dump” and “Experienced Pet Sitter.”
The last short story starter is called “Icy Adventure.”
Students write/file these in their ‘Writing’ books.
When this last story is completed, students are ready to select ONE OF THE THREE short, short stories to thoroughly edit alone and later with a peer.
Next, it’s time to publish it. Publish IN PEN ONLY – NO TYPED STORIES THIS TIME PLEASE. The criterion is from the BC Performance Standards for story writing. The length is 2 to 4 pages with emphasis on dialogue, proper paragraphing, and punctuation. Due Date = Thursday, Dec 20.

**Word Work will continue in the new year.**
…………………………………………….
Math
-in the next 2 weeks we will need to learn about decimals in large #’s   eg.  2.67 million = 2,670,000
- decimal tenths, hundredths, thousandths   eg.  6 thousandths = 0.006
- learn how to add and subtract decimal #’s   eg.   23.44 + 7.218    or     12.32 – 0.298
- learn how to multiply and divide decimals by 10, 100, 1000, 10000 and 0.1, 0.01, 0.001, 0.0001
Eg.   0.593 x 10000 = 5930  and   1.3 / 100 = 0.013 and  163.5 x 0.01 = 1.635 and  34 / 0.001 = 34000

Decimal test to be administered & graded near the last day to record learning progress of these concepts.
……………………………………………….
We may or may not have enough time for this one.... Timeline – need at least 4 – 6 hours. Option B might be a better fit right now.

Problem Solving - Canadian Inventions

The process of scientific problem solving is a critical thinking response to observed experiences in which a science problem is solved. It combines all the activities of asking questions, gathering evidence, designing and proposing solutions, and testing those solutions by making a prototype. This grade 6 level sees the beginning of technical design work, and problems are solved by practical methods. Problem solving includes these stages:

-determine the human needs involved in the situation (or assigned task)
-identify the task, and observe the key attributes involved
-establish the criteria for use of the prototype (set limits)
-plan creatively a possible set of solutions
-determine the available materials or equipment, and select a course of action
-draw a series of possible solutions for building
-build a prototype or model
-test and evaluate the model according to the criteria
-evaluate the results and redo if necessary
-communicate success to others.

Option A... All prototypes will be based on one of the researched problems within our textbooks.

Option B ...
