Getting Ready for iRide

HOW DO I PREPARE MY CHILD FOR iRIDE?
We encourage you and your child to:
1.    Haul your bikes out of storage and have a fun bike washing session.

2.    Check the brakes, adjust the seat height (at least both toes touching the ground when seated) and lubricate the chain and all moving parts.

3.    Add some air in the tires.

4.    Take a good look at the helmet. Adjust the straps so you can slide a couple of fingers under the chin when it is on and the ratchet is tightened. Remember the helmet goes across the forehead and is not tilted back on the head. Make sure there are NO CRACKS in the shell.
Here is some additional information that will be helpful for parents!

·         Children should be able to stand over the top tube of their bike with feet flat on the ground.
·         If your child is a new rider, ideally they should be able to put both of their feet on the ground while seated on their bike. Bikes with training wheels are also welcome.

·         Invest some time with your child! Take them to a park with a grassy slope if they are a beginner rider and help them gain valuable confidence on a bike before sending them to school to ride with their class.

·         If they already ride, plan a family bike ride around the neighbourhood on safe streets or sidewalks to get their cycling legs back in action.

·         Round up your bike stuff - get the helmets, locks and bikes out from storage 1 week in advance and see if anything needs adjusting or fit. This will save the panic moments in case you need to visit your local bike shop for repairs.
·
If you normally to drive your child to school, call around and see if your child can ride to school with a friend who lives close to the school, providing an opportunity to store the bike at the friend's house overnight.

WHERE TO BRING BIKES
Students are asked to bring their bikes as they arrive in the morning to the room assigned to their respective class (not their classroom). Please plan to arrive well before classes start.

WHAT TO BRING AND WEAR
 ·         Suitable bike and lock (if bike secured on bike rack). Please note that the bike needs to be taken home at the end of the day.
·
Helmet: We strongly recommend that helmets are not shared due to lice issues
·         Adequate Clothing + Change of Clothing
o   All activities will take place on the all-weather field. Please note that this is a 'rain or shine' event; make sure your child has adequate clothing for wet and/or cold weather conditions: dress for B.C. weather, wear rain pants and jacket, gloves, tie hair back with an elastic, bring a clip or elastic for wide legged pants, no loose laces, no open-toed shoes.
o   A change of clothes and shoes is a must.
