Another Busy Week!

Reading - Lots of Aboriginal content - RAVEN TALES 
              - Self-Selected Reading also
              - we read, then write for 10 minutes in our reading logs...
              - reading goals: summarizing and character analysis;
Also...
              - making positive decisions - SURVIVAL theme
              - fact versus fiction 
              - read, respond, create, communicate

Writing - next step to the FOUR TYPES OF SENTENCES is...
            - SENSORY IMAGERY:
      Sensory details allow the reader to put themselves into your writing mentally by forming a picture in his/her mind. Without sensory details, the reader becomes bored and cannot emotionally connect to the story.
      Sensory details include words that describe sights, sounds, textures & feelings, smells, and sometimes tastes of the setting, characters, and interactions.

       Directions: Write powerful, image-creating sentences by looking at the image you printed out and adding sensory details. Make up additional details to construct new sentences.

EXPECT WRITING HOMEWORK DAILY IF CLASS TIME IS NOT SUFFICIENT TIME.

PE  - SIX BASKETBALL CENTERS = skill development
         ~ passing, set shots, lay ups, free throw shots,
            chair weave dribbling, and speed dribbles.
         ~ discussions in class about rules, fouls, and strategies.

SKATING ON WEDNESDAY - 9:15 TO 10:30
             - we are walking to the Kinsman arena (leave after announcements)
             - bus will be available for the next two times
             - going with grade 5, Ms. Johnson's class.

Technology - typing, editing, and revising our SENSORY IMAGERY
                      writing on MS WORD 2013

Health Education: finish-up daily physical activity (DPA)
            ~ Booklets due Thursday.

Week of... October 19 to 23

Reading - Self-Selected Reading this week... 
              - we read, then write for 10 minutes in our reading logs...
              - reading goals: summarizing and character analysis;
Also...
              - making positive decisions, fact versus fiction 
              - read, respond, create, communicate

Writing - studying the FOUR TYPES OF SENTENCES  
            - declarative, interrogative, imperative, and exclamatory
            - includes two drama components - one this week and
              one LARGER PRODUCTION NEXT WEEK! 
              (FULL COSTUMES AND PROPS!)

Also     - writing a CINQUAIN POEM 
            - editing skills practiced
              Poem topic is 'Real Life Not Stereotypes!'
                   ~has an art component to it.
              (Due in class on Wednesday).

Word Work - return unit #5 test
                    - New unit #6 

                    - lists are devised to meet students'
                       current levels and challenge them to 
                       advance to the next level. 20 words/group. 
                    - write in agendas
                      and practice for test on Thursday.

Math 
 - Subtraction - continues - good comprehension on regrouping
                                        - we are ready for the BAM Method, now. 

Socials - 6 students need to finish ...
               FAMILY TRADITIONS
             - stereotypes versus real life =
               compare and contrast.
             - Cinquain Poem (see writing section)

PE  - SIX BASKETBALL CENTERS = skill development
         ~ passing, set shots, lay ups, free throw shots,

Technology - practice using more formatting skills
                      on MS WORD 2013

Health Education: continuing with studies on...

  •  strength activities

              - reading goals: to make connections, 
                making positive decisions, fact versus fiction 
              - read, respond, create, communicate

Writing  - writing paragraphs with introductory statements,
               connecting ideas, using linking words and phrases,... 
Topic - family traditions will be published this week 
on the computers. Draft is due on Wednesday.
            
Word Work - return unit #4 test
                    - New unit #5 and NEW FORMAT.

                    - lists are devised to meet students'
                       current levels and challenge them to 
                       advance to the next level. 20 words/group. 
                    - write in agendas
                      and practice for test on Friday.

Math - Addition - using expanded form 

         - working on speed and accuracy
           - Subtraction - begins Wednesday - traditional
                                         and the BAM Method! 

Science - Variable experiments were a hit!

We had an amazing trip to Pines Camp!

Reading - ATH - Finished book - final quiz Monday.

               - short stories commence this week
                             - read, respond, create, communicate

Writing  - writing paragraphs with introductory statements,

               connecting ideas, using linking words and phrases,... 
            Topics - family traditions and recognizing stereotypes.
            
Word Work - return unit #3 test
                    - new unit #4 - write in agendas
                      and practice for test on Thursday.

Math - Addition - up to 3d + 3d 

         - working on speed and accuracy
           - homework = first two pages assigned

Science - Variable experiment - students be ready with all 
materials to present demo. experiment on Thursday!

Socials - starting to study culture, traditions, stereotypes,
               and facts versus opinions (all week).

PE - last week of flag football
      - students evaluated daily on proper throwing,
         catching, tackling, and rules comprehension.

Technology - create a thank you card for Pines Camp or
                      to someone who has made a difference
                      in your life, recently. (10 marks)
