May 30 to June 3

 Important information and dates:

May 30 - start bringing in materials to build your compound machines!

June 2 - Socials Project due = SHARE IT WITH THE CLASS in the afternoon.

            - D.A.R.E. letters due and D.A.R.E. graduation time @11am! 

June 3 - Pro-D - No school for students.

June 7 - District Track Meet for those who qualified in the HES track meet.

June 8 - Band concert @ 1pm

June 9 - class picture day in the AM

           - Mr. B is principal for the day.

June 10 - Demonstrate your compound machine in class! 

June 17 - ALL Pines Camp forms for students and parent PIC forms from the RCMP and $ (for students and chaperones) DUE.

  -  Note: you can turn in the forms and money anytime now.

June 17 - Volunteer TEA @ 4pm.

June 20 - Fun day (afternoon)!

June 21 - 22 - PINES CAMP!!!!!

June 23 - Report Cards go home. last day of school for students - from 9 am to 11am.

              - dismissal is at 11am!

When I give students a spelling page to work at, they are studying spelling patterns. Instead of focusing all our attention on random words, we group and study words by common patterns. My two favorite spelling books that help kids see the common patterns words share are: 'Words Their Way' and 'Treasures Spelling Practice.' We are currently using TREASURES.

                        - Hand-in your TREASURES WW page on the last day of the week for grading... to see if the student understands the patterns for the week.

                      - TREASURES practice page / list words will always be in the agendas.

Socials -  in-depth study of Ktunaxa culture and one other Canadian Aboriginal Group - timeline is one month.

- students will work in groups to learn how to extract information from non-fiction sources...

Canadian Aboriginal Project – Components

 Goals:

a) to learn specific details of a Canadian Aboriginal group and teach these to the class in a creative or ‘experiential’ way.

b) to work collaboratively in a small group.

 

 Components

1.     Speaking – use cue cards to help you teach about specific aboriginal cultural facts and information. Use these with your ppt.

 

2.     Technology – create a MS Power-point slide show, with animations and transitions stating main headings and sub-headings.

                      - use ppt with your cue cards.

 

3.     2-dimentional part – each student will find or create one or more pieces to add to the project in a display of some sort. Combine all your 2-dimensional pieces on a stand-up or flat poster board.

       ~Examples: a coloured drawing of a piece of aboriginal art, of a traditional tool; a printout of an important animal, people dancing,…

 

4.     3-dimensional part – each student will construct or make some type of relevant hands-on object or replicated artifact.

       ~Examples: a diorama; a model of a drum, teepee, inuksuk, tool, piece of clothing, model of a traditional weapon, totem pole, or a porcupine quill… and describe their importance and usage. Do the ART activity on page 30!

~ Students who study ‘food’ could bake / cook a small sample for display and share the recipe (like bannock, soapberry ice cream, moose stew,...).

 

5.     Audio/Video – one student per group will be responsible for ‘music and dance’ section. This student will link a short video clip to share in his/her ppt presentation. Aboriginal ART and other clip art will also be shown.
