April 8 - On Monday, April 8, 2024 a total solar eclipse will cross over Mexico, the United States, and Canada. While the path of totality in Canada occurs in southern Ontario through Nova Scotia, a partial solar eclipse will likely be visible in our region of BC.

Because of the risks of looking directly at the sun without proper eye protection during an eclipse could be damaging...

  • Highlands Elementary school will ensure that students are kept inside from 11:30am to 1:40pm (the time during which the partial solar eclipse may be visible in our area).

April 8 - live animal demonstration 1pm to 2pm.

April 12 - Field Trip - Survival Skills at Wildhorse River

April 16 - GENIUS HOUR PROJECTS ARE DUE AND SHARING ALSO BEGINS ON Tuesday, April 16.  

April 19 - no school

April 22 - Pro-D Day - no school for students

May 3 - no school

May 8 - PROFESSOR WOW AT 9:15AM

 May 10 - HES track and field day at COTR 400 m track for all intermediate students (more information to come as we get closer to the date)

May 13 to 16 - Book Fair !

May 15 & 16 -  Student-led conferences in our classroom! Early dismissal days - students are in school from 8:40 until noon. Conferences are from 1pm to 3pm.

June 7 - Pro-D Day - no school for students

June 24 - HES at Fairmont Hot Springs

June 26 - Grade 4 bike & hike day in the forest!

June 27 -last day of school for students from 9am to 11am

Cross-curricular competencies -

Genius Hour

 1.   Watch the video… What is genius hour?   

2.   Choose something you are passionate about and teach / share it with others.

 Your ideas could be anything from learning how to do a new skill (like sewing or playing the guitar for the first time), to studying space, to volunteering somewhere in our community, to fly fishing, painting with water-colours, inventing something new that solves a problem,… ENDLESS POSSIBILITIES.

 3.   Once you have your chosen topic, SHARE IT! Talk about it, create a poster, power-point, research booklet, a play, video, …. Anything you want and share all your findings IN YOUR OWN WORDS. NO CUT AND PASTING FROM THE INTERNET.
